For residents and visitors in North Alabama, the name The Village Shoppe has been synonymous for over four decades for the ladies apparel and superior customer service.
J. C, and Earline McClanahan met in 1950 as buyers for Sear Roebuck in Florence, Alabama. But it was a rocky road for romance . “You could not be married and both work for Sears in those days…so we made the only logical choice for us. We quit,” says the now Mrs. McClanahan. With no grand, long range plan they decided to go into business for themselves. They took a chance and with just enough money to cover their first order, took a deep breath and on August 13, 1965, The Village Shoppe opened its doors. What’s happened since then, growing from only 1000 square feet of space to now over 6000 square feet, may seem like a fairy tale, but there was no magic involved. Many years of practically no free time, and the responsibility of the store rested on the shoulders of Mac and Earline.
Growing up in the midst of all this were two McClanahan daughters… Kathy and Debbie. My Dad always said” Once you’ve tasted retail, nothing else can compare… You’re hooked.” He was right. We have a passion for fashion and we love this business! Mom and dad are slowing down and enjoying life a bit more, as we try to continue their dream. But while the feeling is family at The Village Shoppe, success here is based on a “Mom and Pop” attitude; it’s the results of sound business knowledge that has a close eye on it’s fickle partner, fashion. We hand select the clothes we sell from markets all over the nation, and maintain a buying office in New York. Our philosophy here at The Village Shoppe has always been, and continues to be, that we offer the best on ladies apparel, accessories, special occasion and a beautiful fur salon with the most up-to-date fashion design and style available.
Our customers are from all across the country. Their ages vary from teen to ageless. We offer size s 2 to 20 and large sizes from 1x-3x.
